Star Wars: The Force Awakens – 10 Mythology Aspects That Must Be Explored Further
9. Obi-Wan's Time On Tatooine
As Revenge Of The Sith closed out its story line, the Jedi are scattered and torn, almost completely obliterated by Order 66. Yet, for 2 Jedi, Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi, there is another fate - exile. Yoda of course travels to the swamp planet of Dagobah, effectively hidden by the obscurity of the planet as well as the unique Force properties that the planet afforded. For Obi-Wan however, the tale is somewhat more complex. After playing stork and delivering young Luke to his 'Aunt and Uncle' at the Lars homestead, Obi-Wan rides off to an unknown future. The thing is, he stays right there, on planet, ostensibly to keep an eye on Luke as he grows up. So, in the next 20 years, what exactly did he do? Well, for one, he changed his name - to Ben (yes, that ought to hold up under any intense scrutiny...) Let's face it, Tatooine, while somewhat remote, wasn't exactly the isolated wasteland that Dagobah was. How is it in those 20 years, no one, not one of the extremely nefarious characters he was sure to encounter, put 2 and 2 together to figure out who he was and report him to the Empire? How could two incredibly Force sensitive beings such as Vader and Palpatine not sense his presence when they were clearly able to hunt down and eradicate other Jedi? What did Obi-Wan do with his time? Enter the occasional Boonta Eve Classic under his pseudonym? Race through Beggars Canyon for kicks, waiting for the kid to grow up and save the galaxy? There must have been some powerful magic at work within the Star Wars universe to allow such a wanted man to stay undetected and able to live out his hermit existence, with the Empire searching the galaxy for the rogue Jedi.
A self professed Stephen King/Star Wars geek and pop culture neophyte, Scott tends to spend much of his time alone pondering life's greatest mysteries.....he also depends heavily on his son Liam, a great sounding board, to set him straight on Star Wars issues and gives him advice on what EXACTLY he's doing wrong.
