Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 10 Things Everybody Missed In The New Trailer
7. The Leader Of The New Imperials
Despite how good things looked across the galaxy in the end of the Special Editions, Palpatine's death in Return Of The Jedi wasn't the end of the Empire. It's not that surprising really; there's a massive command structure and countless soldiers who remain loyal out there - the Civil War can't just end with one Ewok-aided skirmish. The Expanded Universe had great fun with the Imperial Remnant, scattered forces that followed similar ideals but often wound up more extremist than the once all-powerful force. But with that all non-canon, anything goes. Consequently, very little's known about the version of the Empire seen in The Force Awakens beyond their affinity for streamlined armour, although the new trailer does offer up something; the first, albeit blurry, glimpse of their leader. Seen in the background of the Stormtrooper assembly shot is the presumed inheritor of the Emperor's forces. Flanked by a chrome guard (possibly the Chrometrooper, although it could feasibly be a redesign of the red Imperial guard), this (presumed) villain isn't wearing a mask, meaning it isn't Kylo Ren. Odds are then that it's either Domhnall Gleeson or Max von Sydow's character (and, considering their acting history, the latter's more likely).
