Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 10 Ultimate Fan Demands That Will Never Happen
9. All Practical Effects
Star Wars was known and celebrated for its use of some fantastic practical effects, and indeed one of the big problems with the prequels was the heavy use of CGI that really sucked away some of that galaxy far, far away magic. With Abrams at the helm, he'd spoken about wanting to do as much 'real' stuff as possible, something that made a million voices cry out in delight. We'd finally be returning to the roots of Star Wars, without loads of CGI and more proper aliens. It's not exactly the case though. While Abrams and his team's efforts are to be applauded, and the film looks stunning, there are instances where practical effects haven't been used. There's still going to be plenty of CGI in the film, and characters such as Maz Kanata and Supreme Leader Snoke are created using motion-capture, while once upon a time Kanata at least would've been a puppet. It's not a bad thing, and if you can make full use of the technology available (and if you've got Andy Serkis onboard, why wouldn't you dabble in mo-cap?) while still maintaining authenticity and feel of Star Wars, then great. But any wishes for a totally CGI-less film won't be coming true.
NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far.
A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
