Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 12 Reasons It Lives Up To The Hype
7. The Humour's On Point
I'm not sure if it's praise of The Force Awakens, or just a reflection of movies at the moment (but let's go with the former), that the film feels genuinely funnier than most comedies do these days. The original Star Wars trilogy always found room for humour, and that's made its way back here. There are some real laugh-out-loud moments. Right from the off, there's the scene between Kylo Ren and Poe Dameron, in which the pilot mocks his mask and pokes fun at the whole interrogation even when he's clearly in a lot of danger. Even the Stormtroopers are in on the act at one point in the movie, with a couple of them casually turning around and going the other way when they hear Kylo having one of his fits of rage. BB-8, meanwhile, manages to be hilarious with just a tilt of his head. The stars of the show, though, when it comes to humour, are Han, Chewie, and Finn. Sometimes all it takes is a look - or a soft Wookiee roar - while there's also Han sardonically cutting through all of Finn's heroics, with one standout moment coming as they approach Starkiller Base. Finn posits that they can simply go in, use the Force, get out etc, to which Han exasperatedly replies: "That's not how the Force works!"
NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far.
A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
