BB-8 is basically a walking (or rolling) Easter Egg. Not only does he borrow his name from weird sci-fi horror Deadly Friend (though there's no implanting of circuit chips to bring people back to life), his design is also a homage. His upper module is clearly a repurposed (and smaller) R2 unit's head, and the rolling design was inspired by one of Ralph McQuarrie's first concept drawings for R2-D2.
