3. How Did They Get Luke's Old Lightsaber?

OK, so this is the biggie. In Maz's basement of nightmares Rey finds Luke and Anakin’s old lightsaber and learns that sometimes it is better to keep collectibles in their box. But how did it get there on this backwater planet? Maz says that’s "a question for another time". Erm, no - that's a question for now.

That lightsaber was last seen in The Empire Strikes Back when Vader signed Luke up to the Rebellion's cyborg programme without his permission, sending the weapon (and Luke's hand) flying down towards to planet Bespin. Now Bespin is a gas giant, so it's not like the shrivelled orange Yoda can just nip to the surface and pick it up or anything. So where did she get it from?

There's been rumours of Luke's old lightsaber popping up in Episode VII for years, and whenever it came up the big question was "how are they going to explain that". The answer, it turns out, is, "Shut up we’re Star Wars." Given how flippantly they ignored this plot hole here, don’t be surprised if this one never gets answered.
