Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 7 Biggest Unanswered Questions

2. How Does R2-D2 Come Back To Life?

R2-D2 was the first confirmed returning "cast member" for Episode VII, so fans must have been delighted to learn he spends most of the movie in a catatonic state, with his power levels too low to function every since Luke left.

R2-D2 prequeling it up by losing the will to live is confusing, although it only gets more inexplicable at the end when he magically, out of nowhere, comes back to life and conveniently reveals Luke's location. That's some galactic level deux ex machina right there. Which I really wouldn't mind. If, y'know, there was some cautionary attempt at explaining why.

I'd assume it's because Rey, a strong Force user and probable-but-unconfirmed Skywalker turned up at the Resistance base, but the film doesn't even acknowledge that narrative convenience we're just left with more theories. Because we didn't have the rathtar's share of them already.
