5. Is Maz Kanata A Jedi?

Maz Kanata quite clearly states to Rey that she is not a Jedi, but with her role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens significantly cut down (she was originally supposed to accompany Finn, Rey, Han, and Chewbacca back to the Resistance base, where she would have given Luke's lightsaber to Leia), many fans have been wondering both about the character's mysterious past and whether she might secretly be a Force user of some sort. Well, The Visual Dictionary confirms that Maz is Force sensitive and someone who has had many Jedi acquaintances in the past, she actually chose not to go down the path of actually becoming one. Instead, the fascinating new character kept her abilities a secret and decided to use them to help her survive her many adventures as a pirate during the hundreds of years she spent causing chaos in the Galaxy. It wasn't until the death of the Emperor that Maz started using her Force abilities in the open, and after retiring to Takodana, she made the decision to start tracking down relics which were strong in the ways of the Force. It's that ability which ultimately led her to Cloud City, and it was deep in the bowels of that floating city that she found Luke's lightsaber.
