4. Extra Defence
Naturally, it would seem that this lightsaber has been designed with the idea of extra defence. Comparing the new lightsaber to the classic broadsword design that TV viewers are accustomed to thanks to the likes of Game Of Thrones, the part everyone is talking to is what's conventionally referred to as a guard. The purpose of the guard is, as the name would suggest, to guard the wielder's hand while theyre gripping the sword. It obviously does this by ensuring that the opponents blade cannot slice downwards on the wielders blade and into the hand grasping it. Given that the only thing that can cut through a lightsaber is another lightsaber, the extra defence a perfectly natural and sensible addition to the blade. Other than defence, the guard also allows you more counter move options as well. Imagine the Sith locked in a battle with a Jedi and those little lightsaber blades could very easily be used to blindside an opponent at close ranger. The Sith arent exactly averse to using dirty tactics to win a battle, so that would fit perfectly in their modus operandi.
