Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 8 Things You Need To Know About The New Lightsaber

3. Utterly Pointless

On the other side of the fence to those praising the extra defence are those saying that the new design is entirely pointless. As most of the Internet is pointing out, lightsabers can cut through pretty much anything they like. So if the crossguard on the new design is only there because of another emitter being mounted to the bottom of the sword, then it could simply be cut through by another lightsaber, thus rendering it pointless in the first place. The new crossguard doesn€™t seem to be flush to the blade, meaning that a lightsaber could simply slide down it and cut off your hand, as well as break your lightsaber. Although they generally seem to lock together with some sort of electrical force, there€™s actually some precedent for lightsabers sliding in battle. At this moment in time, it seems the new design may be just a cool aesthetic look rather than an actually clever design.
