Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 8 Things You Need To Know About The New Lightsaber

2. Lightsaber Resistant Materials

Having said that about the cross guard being pointless, there is a way in which it could make more sense, and that is through the materials it is designed out of. In the expanded Star Wars universe, there are particular materials that are thought of as lightsaber resistant. Although very rare, substances such as phrik, cortosis and Mandalorian iron have been used to create weapons and armour that can't be cut by a lightsaber. These materials generally cause the lightsaber to short circuit, or simply deflect its beams. Emporor Palpatine€™s lightsaber was even made of phrik, so there€™s a precedent for such materials being used among the Sith as well. Going on the basis that this enemy is a Sith relic hunter, as mentioned earlier, perhaps he is in fact wielding an updated version of Palpatine€™s lightsaber? Alternatively, perhaps the Sith have simply created a new design that is not only aesthetically very scary, giving off an antichrist vibe, but also gives them the edge in battle as well. Whatever it is, there is surely a reasonable explanation that will help to eradicate the fears and complaints being brought about by the new crossguard.
