Why She Could Live: Because she's the female protagonist and, depending on your viewpoint, either "the new Leia" or a female update on Luke Skywalker's protagonist. Strong female characters are a must in blockbusters, and so to see her built up only to be killed off later in the film, leaving audiences with Carrie Fisher, would be hugely surprising. It just doesn't make much sense creatively or from a PR standpoint. Why She Could Die: Again, shock value is the possibility here: what better way to let audiences know that all bets are off than have Rey get destroyed by Kylo Ren in the movie's third act? That said, her potential death would no doubt spark hundreds of blog think-pieces about the role of young women in the blockbuster landscape, so it's really not worth the fuss. Prediction: She's definitely going to live, little to no doubt about it.
