Star Wars: The Force Awakens - Ranking The New Characters Worst To Best
6. Maz Kanata
Kanata wasn't in the film much, but she definitely left a mark, with Lupita Nyong'o disappearing almost entirely into the character. Going into the film, Maz was very much an enigma character, akin to Lor San Tekka thanks to fan theories about whether she would ultimately be good or evil having shaded her ultimate appearance with some interesting ambiguity. Fortunately, though, she offered the film - and, more importantly, Rey - some insight into the Force itself, existing as a minor amalgamation of Obi-Wan and Yoda in terms of her ability to describe the mystical Force to the confused young woman. Her speech about the Force mirrored Obi-Wan's words to Luke back in A New Hope, ditching the midi-chlorian talk from the prequels to plant the Force squarely back in the realm of the metaphysical. Whether we see her again in any of the future films is anyone's guess, but Nyong'o did a solid job of breathing life into the fully CGI character, giving her a great personality in the short amount of time she had. And taking into account she's been around for a thousand years, she's seen more than any of the existing characters could even begin to fathom, so the storytelling potential around her - whether it's knowledge she could continue to bestow or appearances in future standalone films - is endless.
