Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 10 Concerns Raised By The Full Trailer
7. The Elements Look Far Too Familiar
Look, it's a trailer, and so the movie isn't going to show us all of its cards in one fell swoop. That would be ridiculous and pointless.
That said, the elements on show in the latest trailer do nothing to make us feel like this movie is of the game-changing variety.... the individual pieces and plot strands are pretty conventional by Star Wars standards, to the extent that it almost feels like you're watching yet another reprise of an older episode.
The Force Awakens was basically a remake of A New Hope, after all, so it seems fair to assume that this movie has set out with The Empire Strikes Back in mind as inspiration. And here it is, a trailer that pretty much backs up that theory. That's not to insult what's to come on release day, only to say that - as a trailer - there isn't anything particularly groundbreaking to see in its two and a half minutes.
So we get another sand planet, a shot of the Falcon moving through a tight, enclosed space, some Jedi training sequences... all welcomed staples, but given how much freedom Johnson was given with the script, the sight of them feels a bit disappointing. Who expected a weirder, more shocking trailer?
The show of familiar elements might have been purposeful. The studio might be keen to hold back in revealing anything even remotely interesting, because there's no point: they know audiences are going to pay to see the film in their droves, so why spoil the surprise? Fingers crossed that's the case.
