Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 10 Concerns Raised By The Full Trailer
6. It Looks Bleak To A Fault
The Last Jedi does not look like a "laugh," whatever way you try to frame it.
But isn't fun, ultimately, what we all want to experience when we go to see a Star Wars movie? There's an underlying darkness to all of the movies, absolutely, but really a Star Wars film should play as an entertainment.
Everything from the colour palette, to the lines of dialogue, to the action scenes... they all look super intense in their willingness to be bleak. And there's not a moment of comic relief in sight, unless you count that brief shot of the Porg riding shotgun with Chewbacca (and c'mon, we won't count that).
There are no hard and fast rules about what makes Star Wars Star Wars, but a sense of playfulness is key; the sense of wanting to go on the adventure playing out on the screen for yourself. The Last Jedi feels weighed down by its seriousness, and yet even in the supposed dark chapter of the saga, The Empire Strikes Back, fun never took a holiday. It was apparent in every frame.
