The movie's tone is something that has been under discussion for some time now, what with it being the middle entry into a trilogy, and thus expected to go 'the Empire route'.
While it doesn't seem like it will rhyme with The Empire Strikes Back as much as The Force Awakens did with the original Star Wars, there is a definite shift towards a darker tone. As Kamp explains in his AMA, Kathleen Kennedy has described this as the "conflict" entry into the trilogy's 'Setup-Conflict-Resolution' arc.
He also explains that Johnson is aware of the darkness in the movie - the director describes it as "operatic" - and has been careful to counterbalance that with humour. There's apparently a lot of it in the movie, with Johnson wanting "to maintain the feeling... that you’re on a fun ride."
