One thing J.J. Abrams repeatedly stated ahead of The Force Awakens was how he wanted to do as much practical as possible, from sets to effects and so on. It paid off in the film, which really had that Star Wars feel to it, but apparently it's being outdone in that department by The Last Jedi.

The film had more original sets built for it than either The Force Awakens or Rogue One, with the most notable being the huts on Ahch-To, which were painstakingly recreated by the Irish crew to resemble the stone huts monks lived in on Skellig Michael. Johnson said:

“I guess the easy thing would have been to build the village in Pinewood Studios and then put the greenscreen up. But we tasked our incredible Irish crew with building this set on the edge of a cliff right outside of Dingle. When you stood on this set, you were looking out on this magnificent vista and getting all the interactive lighting. It was wonderful.”
