Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 11 Major New Details Revealed By EW
8. Snoke IS CGI... But Don't Expect To Learn Much About Him
While the Snoke we saw in The Force Awakens was done with motion capture technology, with Andy Serkis in the role, there has been some confusion over how he'd be portrayed in The Last Jedi. We'll be seeing him in the flesh, rather than a hologram, and previous images suggested it might not be CGI. Johnson, however, has moved to clear that up, saying:
"It’s entirely a mo-cap performance. [Creature designer] Neal Scanlan built a maquette that we had on set for lighting reference and to give the actors a sense of what it was going to feel like. And then we scanned that and [Industrial Light & Magic] used that in their renderings, but Snoke will be an entirely CG creation.”
It does make sense, and means Serkis will continue to out his mo-cap skills to good use. Indeed, we'll be seeing more of him this time around, with Johnson saying he gets more to do and is more menacing, adding:
"I’d be sitting at the monitor just with my eyes as big as dinner plates. It’s one of those performances where after every line, I’d look over at whoever’s standing next to me with an expression on my face like, ‘Oh, my God, we just got that.”
Snoke is one of the most mysterious and theorised about characters of the new trilogy, but don't expect to learn too much about him in The Last Jedi. Johnson has previously said that the movie doesn't get too deep into the character, and he reiterates that here:
"Similar to Rey’s parentage, Snoke is here to serve a function in the story. And a story is not a Wikipedia page... We’ll learn exactly as much about Snoke as we need to."
