We've already had a tease of these creatures before now - with the first look coming in the behind-the-scenes footage from D23 - but EW gives us even more details about the Porgs, aka this galaxy's best selling toy come Christmas time (with apologies to BB-8 and Baby Groot, but, well, look at them!).

The creatures were puppets created by Neil Scanlan and his team, and heavily inspired by Rian Johnson's visit to Skellig Michael. The filmmaker explained:

"If you go to Skellig at the right time of year, it’s just covered in puffins, and they’re the most adorable things in the world. So when I was first scouting there, I saw these guys, and I was like, oh, these are part of the island. And so the Porgs are in that realm.”

We've also heard previously about how they get absolutely everywhere, and it turns out that includes the Millennium Falcon, as we see one on the old hunk o' junk along with Chewbacca. The Porgs and the Wookiee are clearly going to have a fun dynamic in the movie, and there's even a children's book coming out to tie-in with release called Chewie and the Porgs.
