Never meet your heroes. That's the emerging lesson from Rey's first meeting with Luke Skywalker, who definitely isn't what she expected. She went there seeking a legend, but instead has found an old man deeply scarred by the past, and not too keen on being dragged back into that life.

Rather than handing over the lightsaber and immediately being trained to become a Jedi in happy fashion, it seems that Luke initially rejects her, something that hits Rey pretty hard. Daisy Ridley tells EW: "She’s so hopeful to everything. And obviously there’s a hint of, ‘What the hell?'"

Rey's made some strong relationships already in this universe, including a strong bond with Han Solo, and Luke provides a stark contrast to that, as Ridley says Rey's thinking: "Oh my God, this other man that I lost within a couple days was somewhat of a father figure. Now he’s gone, and instead I’m with this grumpy guy on an island who doesn’t want me here."

Ridley then goes on to comment about how one girl he doesn't know showing up with his lightsaber isn't enough to make him rejoin the action, and Hamill - on top teasing form - says in a different interview: "But does he not know her?"
