8. Luke's Attempted Murder Of Ben Solo

In another series first, The Last Jedi gives us flashback sequences; or to be specific, the same scene from some years earlier retold three different ways.

Of course, the Star Wars movies have long retold tales of old, with minor variations; who can forget that what Obi-Wan told Luke about his father was true, "from a certain point of view." The Last Jedi takes that one further by replaying the same scene, first from Luke's point of view, then that of Kylo Ren, and finally in what we can assume to be nearest the truth.

However, Kylo's flashback is the most troubling of all, as it shows an deranged, almost monstrous Luke Skywalker attacking the sleeping young padawan, with clear intent to kill the boy then known as Ben Solo.

It's understandable that some viewers, young and old alike, may be upset by this moment: Luke Skywalker is the childhood hero of so many of us, so to see him presented as an outright villain - even if this impression proves exaggerated - is not a pleasant sight.

Even so, this is hardly unprecedented. The final conflict in Return of the Jedi already demonstrated that, just as there is still light within Darth Vader, there is also darkness within Luke; but it is his choice to turn his back on the dark side that defines him as a Jedi.

So too does this moment ultimately reinforce that resolve in the third and final retelling, when we see that, while Luke does momentarily consider killing Ben Solo, he sees the error of his ways - just not quite soon enough.
