Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 13 Audacious Moments That Have Divided Fans

7. Yoda's Destruction Of The Sacred Tree

Much as Luke Skywalker's increasingly downbeat arc in The Last Jedi left many fans despairing, not everyone may have been entirely pleased by what transpired when the ghost of his old teacher showed up.

Given that Yoda's spectral form arrives just as Luke, steadfast in his resolve to bring an end to the Jedi forever, is about to burn down the sacred tree that houses the original Jedi texts, one would be forgiven for thinking that backwards-talking old muppet has come to change Luke's mind.

Instead, Yoda - recognising Luke's underlying uncertainty on the matter - conjures a lightning bolt to strike the tree and burn it down for him, with a jovial laugh.

On the one hand, this is a continuation of that same central theme we come back to again and again in The Last Jedi: letting go of the past. Yoda, in his wisdom, recognises that things cannot stay they way the where; and moreso, that a sacred tree is no less hollow than the legend that Luke holds in such disdain.

The point is, as Luke himself declares, the Force is present in all things, and the Jedi do not by any means have a monopoly on it. As such, the Force will continue regardless with or without them, so why should the tree and the texts matter?

Of course, this whole matter may be slightly undermined by the later reveal that Rey, having left to rejoin the Resistance by this point, actually has the original Jedi texts in her possession, clearly suggesting that she will continue her own training - and, almost certainly, pass on what she learns.
