19. Admiral Akbar RIP

Given his importance to the wider mythology of Star Wars and the affection with which he's held by fans, the fact that Admiral Akbar ends up being killed rather unceremoniously in the first act should come as a fairly big surprise.

He's part of the huge number of Resistance leadership who are killed when Kylo Ren attacks the Rebel freighter and destroys the bridge, dying off screen as part of a crowd, which feels some distance away from the ending he probably deserved.

And even when it's revealed he's died, the news is stated rather matter-of-factly, with very little ceremony. It's not right.
