Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 39 Things We Learned From The Director's Commentary

28. The Beacon

Star Wars Beacon
Lucasfilm

The beacon is a recurring device in the movie, with its purpose to inform Rey of where the Resistance is so she can find her way back to them (ideally with Luke along for the ride).

Johnson was conscious that Rey and Finn were split up in this film, after their relationship and chemistry being such a strong part of The Force Awakens, so the beacon came late as a way to connect them. Any time he could find a place to use it he would, in order to cement the connection between the stories and the two characters.
