Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 6 Possible Meanings Behind The New Title

4. Luke Will Die

The Last Jedi

This is a distinct possibility that we had all better brace ourselves for. Rey might have the Force, but she will never be properly trained in the ways of the Jedi and could never rightfully take the title if something intervenes and kills him before he can help her become her destiny. If that is the case, the Order dies with him, even if the Force does not.

But then again, it is unlikely the filmmakers would post such an obvious spoiler before we've seen a single image from the film. After The Force Awakens built up to the return of Luke, it would be a waste to kill him off after everyone's efforts to find him. And to kill off a major character right after Han's death, and the tragic departure of Carrie Fisher would be a cheap trick when we still have so much to explore about what Luke has been up to.

On the other hand, it would truly mark the passing of the torch to a new generation of Star wars characters, and indicate that the next 2 chapters of Star Wars will head off in a brave new direction none of us were expecting. It could be a gamble that pays off, or it could be too much for audiences to handle.
