5. Who Is The Film’s Main Villain?

It's unclear exactly what role Snoke will play in the sequel trilogy going forward, since so little is known about Andy Serkis's shadowy villain. He only appeared in The Force Awakens in hologram form, but The Last Jedi trailers appear to position him as the main antagonist. But is that really the case?

There's a compelling fan theory out there which suggests Luke has been seduced by the Dark Side and may be an even bigger threat to the universe than the First Order. The death of his Padawans and Han Solo's murder could be enough to channel the kind of anger and hate that leads to suffering.

This could potentially explain why Snoke and the First Order are wary of Skywalker. They don't appear to be the kind of black and white evil that wants to simply destroy the universe. Perhaps they're aware that Luke's particular combination of darkness and light has the potential to do just that, in which case the Resistance should be equally wary of him.

Turning one of the most iconic movie heroes of all time evil would send shockwaves across the galaxy, but Disney has been only too keen to fan the flames of conjecture here, depicting Skywalker bathed in Sith red on an official poster and placing him on both the light and dark sections of a dual-sided cinema standee.

Luke was tempted by the Dark Side in the original trilogy and having him fully embrace it would be quite the 'I am your father moment', but if the filmmakers do go along this disquieting path, hopefully they will have the decency to redeem him in Episode IX.

There are definitely indications that Luke's days of being tempted by the Dark Side are far from behind him, but it's debatable whether this will see him rise above Snoke in the villain hierarchy, and let's not forget that Kylo Ren could be the one who ends up in the top spot if he continues on his current path.
