Much of the conversation around the title of Episode VIII has been centred on who it refers to: Luke, Rey, or both of them?

While it's not an answer, Rian Johnson has said that the core of the movie will be the relationship between the pair. Of Rey, he said he arrives on the island "both not knowing what’s going to happen and also having a lot of expectations in her head about how this is going to go. It very much feels like what we all go through in adolescence, the dawning of this new chapter of our lives."

He also added that the theme of family will be further explored in The Last Jedi, and is "a huge part of especially Rey’s character, something that was a really powerful part of her setup and something I really wanted to dig into with this."

As for Luke, he's approaching it in a similar way to J.J. Abrams - who took the job after wanting to find the answer to the question 'Who is Luke Skywalker?'. For Johnson, the question is 'What's going on with Luke Skywalker?'

This time, the movie will actually spend enough time with the character to find out.
