Benicio Del Toro's DJ is another msyterious new addition to the cast, but rumours and plot leaks have confirmed that he's basically a walking MacGuffin who becomes the centre of a hugely important sub-plot for Finn and Rose, who are charged with kidnapping him.

What we know about DJ is that he's a hacker (in Star Wars parlance a "slicer") who is so gifted he can even hack droids, but he's also not affiliated to anyone but himself. He seeks to use war to his own advantage, never taking sides and seeking to profit using his skills. That makes him dangerous in an entirely different way, but he's definitely powerful thanks to his skills.

Imagine a character who could use any type of technology against its original owner: that's clearly why he's so important to the Resistance.
