The Rise of Skywalker's opening title crawl is odd for a number of reasons, not least that it begins with the amusingly campy declaration, "The dead speak!"

But what's more surprising is the decision to hastily re-introduce Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) in the crawl itself, which notes, "The galaxy has heard a mysterious broadcast, a threat of REVENGE in the sinister voice of the late EMPEROR PALPATINE."

The broadcast mentioned here was quite literally broadcast to the world a few days before the movie's release, however, as part of a cross-promotion event with the hit video game Fortnite.

Players who were online in the game at a specific time would hear Palpatine boom out, "The great error is corrected. The day of victory is at hand. The day of revenge. The day of the Sith."

Naturally, the ballsy move to have the movie's instigating moment take place both off-screen and in a video game no less has been hugely divisive with fans already.
