1. The Empire Strikes Back

Star Wars Celebration Art
Lucasfilm

Score: 94%

Critic Consensus: "Dark, sinister, but ultimately even more involving than A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back defies viewer expectations and takes the series to heightened emotional levels."

The best rated Star Wars film arguably features the most iconic scene in Star Wars history and one of the most iconic scenes in film history full-stop.

The Empire Strikes Back features the Empire pursuing the Rebel Alliance with Darth Vader searching for Luke's friends, while Luke trains with Jedi Master Yoda in order to prepare himself for a future encounter against the Dark Lord.

The Empire Strikes Back features a perfect storyline, as Luke develops his skills as a Jedi and is shown the glimpses of darkness within himself. Star Wars is full of iconic moments and characters, however this film is one of the most jam packed, introducing audiences to characters such as Lando Calrissian, Yoda and Boba Fett. Empire also features the iconic "I am your Father" scene, which blew the minds of audiences back when the film was first released.

Empire left our heroes battered and bruised by the end of the film, showcasing a cast of characters that did not win and had flaws, giving fans a reason to come back for a third instalment and delivering the best overall film in Star Wars history.
