Steven Spielberg: EVERY Movie Ranked Worst To Best

25. A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)

ET The Extra Terrestrial
DreamWorks

Originally set to be a Stanley Kubrick picture, A.I Artificial Intelligence allowed Spielberg to settle into the sci-fi themes that had characterised much of his earlier work.

The film follows David (a striking Haley Joel Osment), a robot who sets out to become a real boy, and whilst its themes of family and technology are often quite affecting, the film just feels a bit disjointed in places. It's as if Spielberg (who also wrote the script) was trying his damnedest to balance his own style with that of the late Stanley Kubrick, who was set to make the film before passing away.

It's still a thoughtful film, and many people are likely to rank it much higher, but due to its wonky tone, it falls down here.
