Steven Spielberg: Ranking His Movies From Worst To Best

22. The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn (2011)

tintin Spielberg's first installment in a planned trilogy seemed like a major departure from the director's normal modus operandi. His first animated film, it is a thrill to see Spielberg uninhibited by the limitations of cameras and practical sets. The camera is constantly moving, the energy ever present, and light, imagery and textures are beautifully rendered - but the film falls flat with its uncanny valley motion capture work on the characters. But the film's greatest shortcoming is its script: stakes never seem particularly high for Tintin who seems to set out on this adventure almost as a lark, and the clunky, constant stream of exposition becomes quite obnoxious at some point. Still, it's entertaining enough and quite beautifully animated to boot.
