Suicide Squad: 10 Major New Details You Need To Know About The Ayer Cut
7. There Was Only One Battle David Ayer Managed To Win
Warner Bros. didn't bring in a different filmmaker to write and direct Suicide Squad's reshoots, but Ayer has dropped plenty of telling hints about just how much the studio ended up changing. Recently, he explained that there was actually only one battle with them he managed to win, and that was keeping in a particularly dark subplot involving Task Force X member Diablo.
As you may recall, he overcame an inability to use his powers after accidentally killing his family, and was revealed to be an Aztec God before sacrificing himself to save the rest of the team. It wasn't the best story arc, but it was one which resonated with a lot of people back in 2016.
"It was the only battle I won," Ayer claims. "Decision makers were allergic to Diablo killing his family. Look at my films - death, guilt, redemption and emancipation from toxic relationships are themes I explore as a filmmaker. The human soul is beautiful and complex." That's a pretty deep expalnation for a fairly cheesy storyline, but it really does emphasise how much the studio interfered here.
