Suicide Squad: 12 Ways The Marketing Has Been Genius
11. The Casting Really Won People Over
When the main cast of Suicide Squad was announced in December 2014, the first thing any self-respecting reporter did was rush to Wikipedia, because boy had DC found some obscure characters. Isn't Enchantress Marvel? And surely Captain Boomerang has to be a joke?
It was highly eclectic to say the least - alongside the expected naming of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as the Joker, the likes of Cara Delevingne and Jai Courtney were added to the cast - and had a major impact on people's appreciation for the film. When the announcement came, I actually wrote a piece looking at how this film could be a breath of fresh air to the whole franchise.
There were major castings later on (Viola Davis as Amanda Waller) and switch-ups (The Revenant forced Tom Hardy to drop out, replaced as Rick Flagg by Joel Kinnaman), but the daring choices made at the start really loomed large and made the whole thing feel incredibly distinct from everything going on elsehwere in the DCEU.
