Suicide Squad 2: 10 Comics James Gunn Should Adapt

4. From The Ashes

After a less-than-successful run in 2001 from Keith Giffen, the Suicide Squad stayed fairly covert, being used sparingly but sometimes making a big appearance like in 52. The book came back in a big way in 2007 though, with John Ostrander returning as writer.

From The Ashes collects the entire run of the 2007 Suicide Squad which, while only eight issues long, still packed one hell of a punch. The plot revolves around a once-presumed-dead Rick Flag, who died relatively early on in the first Suicide Squad series, coming back from a dinosaur-infested island and four years inside a prison in Qurac. He's seen some things, and it quickly leads to some massive internal problems in the Squad as a result.

A return to form for the Squad, Ostrander wrings out every ounce of action while rejuvenating the Suicide Squad for the 21st century proper. Outside of the New 52 and DC Rebirth versions of the team, this is the most modern reflection of the team and it doesn't require previous knowledge of what they're all about.

Better still, with a blistering narrative, bombastic action, and plenty of dark humor, From the Ashes is right up James Gunn's alley.
