Suicide Squad: 8 Reasons Jared Leto's Joker Is The Worst Part Of The Film
1. He's Doesn't Fit The World He's In
While it's very popular to have Joker as a cracked reflection to Batman, something that's even more essential is to make sure he's a product of the world he's in. Every Joker perfectly fits into the tone of the respective movie/TV series, and as a result his psychosis is all the more terrifying. You couldn't have Caesar Romero taking on Christian Bale, or Michael Keaton beating on Heath Ledger; it's a very delicate balance.
With that in mind, the biggest issue with Leto is that he just doesn't fit. In this gritty movie and grounded, faux-philosophical wider world, he comes across as more of an eccentric than a full-blown psycho. Arranging knives in a perfect circle would fit the theatrics of Romero, for example, and barging into a prison is proper Ledger, and there's a definite whiff of Nicholson to some of the flashbacks, but they don't really gel with the rest of the film, or the Batman he's supposed to be the nemesis of.
This is the most frustrating element of Leto's performance; if you strip it of the movie and were to provide it with the proper backing, you could have something truly captivating. As it is, it's just a terrible character who's kinda curious to look at.
