7. ... And Give Them A Great Relationship
Smith and Robbie are two of the biggest names in the movie, and they seem to be playing the two leads. They also have an immense chemistry that they developed in Focus thats sure to carry over into this story. Their characters have had a fling in the New 52 Suicide Squad comics, and all signs point to that affair being brought to life on the big screen. Its important that Suicide Squad explores the relationships between the squad members, whether it be an intense rivalry, friendship or something elseand the relationship between Harley and Deadshot could serve to define both of them that much more deeply. Both characters share a common trait in mental baggage, and while both characters start to feel an attraction toward each other, the attraction is very superficial. But perhaps within their dalliance, they both come to connect in ways neither wouldve imagined, and something wakes within them. Harleys experiences with Deadshot and the Squad could see her gain some independence, and help her find the courage to stand up to the Joker. Deadshot could grow protective of her, and that could wake the numbed humanity within him that brings him back, further deepening his transformation from villain to antihero. Despite their psychotic and sociopathic symptoms, they both have very human roots. Deadshot had a family, and Harley had a life as a psychiatrist. Theres a lot to explore in monsters who werent always that. One of the most important parts of a well-written story is character development. Suicide Squad needs to make audiences care for and understand these characters, and the best way to do that is to highlight their relationships with one another. Deadshot and Harley is just one of the possible combinations it needs to explore.
