Suicide Squad: 8 Ways Enchantress Is Way Worse Than Leto's Joker

4. She Doesn't Fit The Tone

It's all well and good bringing in mystical elements to comic book movies - Marvel are doing it in a big way - but it doesn't work out of the door. There is a reason Doctor Strange is coming in after lots of drip-feeding, and a reason why DC have recognized that their own Shazam! needs to come further down the line. Because in proximity with Nolan's influence on the DC Universe (and it's still a big influence with Zak Snyder still intent on making as po-faced a Superman series as possible), magic is not possible. The commitment to realism was so great that Snyder was basically forced to science the sh*t out of his powerful characters, and take the lead from Nolan in terms of jettisoning silly characters. It worked for Nolan, because he committed unflinchingly to his tone, but now we're faced with this situation where we have basically a Nolanite Batman (grumpy, not pulpy), a Nolanite Superman and a silly-looking witch who is possessed and looks like something from the darkest corners of Knockturn Alley. That's the whole issue with Killer Croc too - they're trying so hard to normalise the silliness (by putting him in a hoodie!!) that it's hard to even know what the tone is supposed to be. The question of how an all-powerful witch demon fits with a Dirty Dozen style team in muted colours is even more complex.
