Suicide Squad: How To Fix The 5 Biggest Casting Mistakes
3. The Joker
Who's Playing Him? Jared Leto Why Shouldn't It Be Him? OK, Jared Leto isn't a terrible pick for the Joker. He's an Oscar-winning actor who has been proven to have an unexpectedly wide range and, if set reports are to believed, he's gone all in to portray the Clown Prince of Crime. However, the more we learn about this version of the character it becomes clear that a key reason for being Leto being cast was to align with the vision of a punk-Joker, with self-referential tattoos and a disposition to going topless, rather than what he'll exactly bring to the role. Who Should It Be Instead? Willem Dafoe Why? This recasting is not really suggesting a different actor, but rather a shift in the whole approach to the Joker. If we're getting an older Batman, an older Joker makes sense (yes, Leto is actually five months Affleck's senior, but his angle is certainly not reflecting that), so who better than the actor who's been a fan-favourite for the Joker since Tim Burton was involved - Willem Dafoe. Anybody's going to have a rough job inheriting the Joker from Heath Ledger, but Dafoe is maniacal in a different, more comic-classical way that would make the comparisons harder to make.
