Suicide Squad: Ranking Every Character From Worst To Best

7. The Joker

Jared Leto's Joker is a strange creature: he's built on a solid foundation of comic book reference points, and has a particularly visceral appeal to him, but at times it just feels too focused and too showy, and he's largely a passenger in a plot.

Remarkably, it seems that the cuts of his material actually sidelined him (like the grenade scene at the train station that never made it past the trailers), meaning that removing him entirely wouldn't actually have changed the plot.

Leto's performance is bound to be divisive too. I can admire the art in the perversity and the agenda to do something different, but it's horribly off-putting the minute you notice he's basically playing Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow in Joker cosplay after a few strong hits of crack.

Is there scope for more of him? Begrudgingly yes, but it comes with the caveat that he has to have a director who'll get a performance out of him that goes beyond transformation.
