Played By: Joel Kinnaman. Who's Joel Kinnaman? Though he's appeared in films like David Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, the Denzel Washington/Ryan Reynolds-led Safe House, and even last year's RoboCop remake - in which he played the titular character - most people outside his home country of Sweden will likely recognize him from his role in all four seasons of The Killing. In a film populated by psychopaths and witches and giant crocodile men, Rick Flag is likely going to be the audience's "in" to the world of the Suicide Squad. As the straight man to all the crazy he's put in charge of leading, Kinnaman has the huge task of attempting to make Flag stand out against a backdrop of built-in fan favorites. Considering that Tom Hardy would've taken the role had it not been for his extended shooting on The Revenant - which he's still sore about, dispelling any rumors that he wanted to walk away - it's doubtful that Flag's role as leader is trivial, with both his irritation over having to lead criminals and his dynamic with Deadshot likely what will give weight to his arc in the film. On the surface, Flag may be the most "normal" of all the faces audiences are going to be meeting, but it's that normalcy that will hopefully make him compelling.
