While getting caught up in all the excitement surrounding the likes of Justice League, Logan and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, it can be easy to forget the smaller, powerful indie films that are capable of leaving just as much of an impression as any blockbuster could.

That's why the annual Sundance Film Festival - the biggest of its kind in the United States, held at the start of each calendar year in Park City, Utah - is such an important event.

It brings these hidden gems from the shadows and into the light, giving them valuable media coverage that will hopefully ensure each project receives the attention it deserves (last year's standout was Manchester By The Sea, and Sundance was key in helping it gain traction).

Of course, not everything that comes out of the festival will be worth your time, but 2017's slew of films, as is usually the case, contains many that you should keep firmly on your radar throughout the year and into the 2018 awards season.

With this in mind, here are ten movies from the 2017 Sundance Film Festival that are generating a substantial amount of buzz...

Directors: Cary Murnion, Jonathan Milott

The Plot: Exploring the 'what-if' scenario of a second American civil war, Bushwick finds the titular Brooklyn neighbourhood under attack by a mysterious military force.

The film follows a grad student (Brittany Snow) and an ex-Marine (Dave Bautista) as they struggle to survive this hostile warzone.

The Buzz: While Bushwick probably won't be a frontrunner come the Oscars next year, it's shaping up to be a timely slice of B-movie entertainment spearheaded by a thoroughly engaging Dave Bautista.

America has been enduring a widespread political civil war since last November, with Trump supporters on one side and his detractors on the other, so Bushwick couldn't have come at a better time.

Variety called the film "violent and provocative", heaping praise on its leading man who, apparently, is a "serious action star in the making".

Bushwick does not yet have a wide release date.
