Sundance 2017: 10 Films Everyone Is Buzzing About

8. The Big Sick

Brigsby Bear
Amazon Studios

Director: Michael Showalter

The Plot: Produced by Judd Apatow, The Big Sick is a rom-com based on the real-life relationship between Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon (both of whom also wrote the screenplay).

The pair must deal with their cultural differences, as Kumail's Muslim family are dissatisfied with his decision to date an American woman.

The Buzz: It's currently rocking an impressive 86 on Metacritic and distributor Amazon Studios had to fend off heavyweights Sony and Fox Searchlight in order to land the rights, so there's a lot of excitement around this one already.

The production is stacked with comedic talent; Kumail is famous for his stand-up and has appeared in numerous comedies over the years like Sex Tape and The Five-Year Engagement, director Showalter worked on Wet Hot American Summer and its recent Netflix series and then there's Apatow himself - who needs no introduction.

In short, expect the laughs to come thick and fast.

It's been described as "hilarious" and "tearjerking" by The Verge and praised for its "insights into the culture clash" by Indiewire, meaning it's that rare comedy that also packs a ton of social commentary.

The Big Sick does not yet have a wide release date.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
