Sundance 2017: 10 Films Everyone Is Buzzing About

7. To The Bone

Brigsby Bear
Netflix

Director: Marti Noxon

The Plot: Lily Collins stars as Ellen, an anorexic young woman who's endured multiple unsuccessful treatments for her disorder.

She then meets a doctor (Keanu Reeves) who subjects her to a fifth, unconventional treatment in an LA home called 'Threshold'.

The Buzz: Though not an outright comedy, To The Bone takes such an honest approach to its subject matter that it contains multiple flashes of dark humour, which brings some much needed levity to proceedings.

And, since the film is exploring a disorder that rarely receives the cinematic treatment, it doesn't necessarily feel like it's just retreading old ground, when it could so very easily have been your typical run-of-the-mill recovery story.

Part of what makes To The Bone so special is that director Marti Noxon has been through what Ellen is experiencing, so the drama feels natural and real, not heightened for cinematic effect.

To The Bone does not yet have a wide release date, but since Netflix are distributing, expect to be watching it from the comfort of your own home later this year.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
