Actor-comedian Jerrod Carmichael makes a fierce debut with this heartfelt and hilarious black comedy about two friends (Carmichael and Christopher Abbott) who enter a pact to kill themselves before the end of the day.

It goes without saying that such a premise could go horribly wrong several different ways, but thanks to Carmichael's sympathetic and brutally honest filmmaking, this grimly funny bromance maintains an even keel throughout.

It helps immeasurably that the two leads are superb in their roles, underlining a wider discourse about male mental health which is still so underserved in society.

It's not always an easy sit, but it's tough to find films that speak so frankly about such hard-hitting and vital topics.

On the Count of Three is awaiting distribution.
