Surely the most essential documentary of the year (so far), Nanfu Wang's (One Child Nation) In the Same Breath takes a deep dive into the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, presenting a bevy of horrifying, never-before-seen footage from the pandemic's ground zero - Wuhan, China.

Wang's film is by no means easy to watch and basically the furthest thing from escapism you could find right now, but it is a vital takedown of the Chinese government's crass efforts to spin their "triumph" over the virus as a political tool, which could well have wider-reaching global implications in years to come.

Of all the films produced about the pandemic while it's still happening, this is one of the few truly essential offerings.

In the Same Breath will be distributed by HBO.
