Sundance Film Festival 2023: 20 Movies You Need To Know About
16. Fair Play
Perhaps no film from this year's Sundance generated quite as much feverish discussion as Fair Play - an erotic thriller starring Alden Ehrenreich and Phoebe Dynevor as Luke and Emily, a young couple who work together at a hedge fund.
Their fulfilling relationship is threatened, however, when Emily is promoted over Luke, forcing Luke to reckon with his own toxic jealousy and insecurity, all while Emily must consider what success means for a woman in the cutthroat financial world.
An extremely impressive directorial debut from Chloe Domont, Fair Play is basically a very classy, brilliantly acted rendition of the sorts of sexy thriller movies that aren't really made anymore.
Ehrenreich and Dynevor are absolutely magnetic in the demanding lead roles, while the sharp script tackles a bevy of thorny themes with skill and clarity.
Of all the feature films premiering this year, Fair Play is probably the one most likely to have enough juice to make it to next year's Oscars. In the very least, it feels like a strong contender for a Best Original Screenplay nomination.
Fair Play will premiere on Netflix later this year.
