Super Bowl 2019: Ranking Every Trailer From Worst To Best
8. The Handmaid's Tale
Something that has become a bit of a staple at the Super Bowl in the last decade or so is the presence of heavily patriotic ads, focusing on the people of America. Generally, they wind up being for a beer or a car that is trying to sell itself as the choice for American audiences. We even got to see several of them this year, which is exactly what makes The Handmaid's Tale ad so brilliant.
Starting out as an essentially verbatim parody of these types of ads, the spot slowly morphs into something more sinister, revealing its actually an ad for the show's upcoming third season on Hulu. The weaponization of this overtly pandering style feeds directly into the show's own themes, while simultaneously delivering a biting meta-commentary on the exploitation of faux-patriotism in American advertising.
It's all around a stellar piece of advertising, one that undoubtedly thrilled fans of the show and made the uninitiated sit up and take notice.
