9. Mabel Kills The Insect Queen - Hoppers
Even accepting that Pixar are the masters of crafting animation that's as entertaining for adults as it is for kids, who expected one of the most unhinged death scenes of the year to show up in their newest release Hoppers?
When protagonist Mabel (Piper Curda) meets up with the Animal Council to warn them of the imminent destruction of their habitat, she inadvertently convinces them to plot the assassination of greedy Mayor Jerry Generazzo (Jon Hamm).
In her panicked attempt to stop the Insect Queen (Meryl Streep) pestering her, Mabel ends up reflexively squishing her, leaving everyone agape - the gathered animals and, yes, the entire audience.
Though Pixar is hardly averse to featuring death in their movies, it's rarely this sudden or shocking, especially when it comes at the hands of our hero no less.
It's an incredible tide-turning moment, positioning the Queen's son, Titus (Dave Franco), to take up her mantle as King and become the overarching villain for the film's remainder.
