17. "I'm A Vampire" - Marty Supreme

Marty Supreme
A24

Even for the wild standards of the Sadie brothers, Marty Supreme went places, and was never more ferociously, hilariously unpredictable than when businessman Milton Rockwell (Kevin O'Leary) confronts Marty (Timothée Chalamet) at the end.

After losing a staged table tennis match against champion Endo (Koto Kawaguchi) as organised by Rockwell, an exasperated Marty challenges Endo to a real match, much to Rockwell's frustration.

In the late stages of the game, as the tide begins to turn in Marty's favour, Rockwell gives him a dressing down with a speech that not a single person, Marty or the audience, could've possibly seen coming:

"Let me explain to you. I was born in 1601. I'm a vampire. I've been around forever. I've met many Marty Mausers over the centuries. Some of them crossed me, some of them weren't straight. They weren't honest. And those are the ones that are still here. You go out and win that game, you're gonna be here forever too. And you'll never be happy. You will never be happy."

It's totally insane, and better yet, filmmaker Josh Safdie later revealed that Kevin O'Leary came up with the vampire line himself, even suggesting a climax that revealed Rockwell was indeed a real vampire.

Safdie loved the idea and even had digital teeth designed for O'Leary, though this idea was ultimately nixed by the studio. Probably for the best, but the monologue that made it into the final film is only slightly less bonkers.
